logo Speech and Language Therapy

The speech and language therapy staff at John Chilton aim to provide a quality service to children in the school who present with difficulties in communication and/or eating and drinking due to learning and/or physical disability.

We aim to work collaboratively in sharing our specialist knowledge with parents, education staff and other health professionals thus providing an integrated approach to addressing the speech and language needs of the children.

We will look at a child’s communication skills by addressing the following areas:-
Understanding, expressive language, speech, social skills, attention and writing.

Following an assessment and discussion with parents/carers and relevant professionals, a decision will be made about how to meet the child’s speech and/or feeding needs.

Within John Chilton School a total communication approach is advocated, encouraging, where appropriate, the use of alternative, augmentative communication systems. (AAC) This includes manual signing in the form of Makaton, use of symbols, both in the environment and in communication books, and for some children, electronic voice output communication aids.
